This project was focused on making the yard more functional and water-friendly. The clients wanted to include a few seating areas for smaller gatherings in addition to space for hobbies like gardening. Another key area was the utility easement allowing for access to the natural space behind the property. Finally, better drainage was required, especially in the front yard.
The lawn was reduced by more than 50% to drastically reduce water use while also adding space for raised beds and a trail to the lower yard. While some fruit trees were requested, the majority of the plants are native or drought tolerant. To assess runoff in the front yard, two bioswales were added to direct and infiltrate rainwater. The utility easement was changed out to gravel to reduce erosion.
