For this property, the client previously hired a company to add an ADU and a pool to the lower yard. For the rest of the design, they had two main objectives in mind. Firstly, they wanted us to assess drainage problems on the site caused by a neighbor’s grading changes. Secondly, they were eager to create a warm and inviting space that could accommodate their entertaining needs. Even with a large patio area, their frequent gatherings of over 30 guests required a more suitable setup. They also expressed the need for better circulation in the yard.
For entertaining hey were particularly interested in the concept of an outdoor kitchen and a firepit with ample seating near the new pool. Furthermore, they sought a better solution for parking their trailer near an access road connecting to the southeast corner of the yard. Emphasizing their diverse interests, they desired spaces for meditation and gardening, as well as a bocce ball court. A key requirement was incorporating waterwise plants throughout the landscape, in addition to fruit trees rather than traditional shade trees.
To assess the need for better circulation, a second staircase leading to the lower yard is added to fully connect the new features. A large, turnaround driveway capable of accommodating an RV is located in the southeastern corner of the yard, with native plants used as screening. Multiple seating areas are added throughout the yard to provide a variety of areas to relax or socialize, such as at the outdoor kitchen or the poolside firepit. To accommodate the diverse hobbies of the family, a pool and hot tub, large area of raised beds, and a bocce ball court are added. To address flooding and pooling during storms, a dry creek bed spans the lowest point of the yard to redirect and infiltrate the water.
